Born in Bristol, England, a city known for it’s pirates, I emigrated with my family at a young age to New Zealand. I grew up in a tiny village surrounded by deep forest and crystal clear rivers. My childhood memories are full of kayaking, swimming and falling out of trees. After completing my education at Queen Elizabeth College in the city of Palmerston North I bought a one-way ticket to London and spent the next 10 years travelling and working around the world. I got around mostly by hitch-hiking. It was the nineties, a time when drivers still actually stopped for scruffy looking travellers. I spent two memorable years living on a tiny tropical island in Thailand where I was lucky enough to land a job as a barman. Other places I lived which stand out in my memory are New York, Australia, Israel, Scotland and Spain. During those adventurous years I could always carry all my worldly possessions in a small backpack. I was never really sure where my next meal was coming from but it always did. This experience of travelling with very little and having to put my trust in strangers certainly had a big influence on the way I perceive the world and the person I am today.
In 2001 I found myself almost out of money in the Czech Republic. Winter was approaching fast. With the help of some friendly Czechs I was offered a job in a language school in the quaint town of Nachod. Planning to stay a year a then move on I accepted the offer. That year I turned 30. I realised that I was rather tired of traveling. I enjoyed my job and the way of life in the Czech Republic. So I stayed and I am still here 15 years later albeit in a different town. I came to Cesky Tesin / Cieszyn for a trip 8 years ago and instantly fell in love with the place. It must be that lovely smoggy air. Anyway, here I am and here I stay.
Having now 15 years of teaching experience under my belt teaching teenagers and adults I feel I have become a much better teacher. It’s a job I never seem to tire of. I enjoy meeting new people and helping them to improve their English. I am at home in conversation classes, exam preparation and business English. I teach one to one and group classes.
My interests include improving my Czech language skills, discovering forgotten corners of Czech, Poland and Slovakia, beer tasting and hiking in the Beskydy.
